Severn-th heaven for Ross rallyers

By Mark Elson in Motorsport

ROSS-on-Wye garage owner Steve Bennett raced to third out of 22 cars in the Rallynuts Severn Valley Historic Stages.

Driving a Ford Escort with Osian Owen navigating, the duo also placed second in class D, finishing in 48 minutes 15 seconds.

Eighty six cars revved into the forests of Epynt and Radnor for the seven-stage event, including two from Ross and District Motor Sports Club.

Starting from the Royal Welsh showground in Builth Wells, RDMSC duo Bennett and Owen were 1.17 back on National A field winners Nick Elliot and Dave Price also in a Ford Escort.

Ross mechanic Paul Gunter also teamed with Jack Walby in a Ford Escort RS to finish second in BD2 class in 53.14, placing 23rd out of 41 in the National B field.

Winners were Northern Irish duo Connor McCloskey and John Rowan in a Ford Fiesta in 44.22.

The course on Saturday, June 3, proved very dusty and fast with some of the top crews from Great Britain in action, with a very tight format based on the showground, as crews returned for servicing after every stage.

On Sunday, June 4, the Epynt ranges were again used but this time on tarmac. The winners were Damon Cole and Paul Morris in a Ford Escort.

This event proved to be very tricky due to heavy rain in the morning making the tarmac very slippery.
