FRIENDS and family paid their respects at a ‘funeral’ for a Lydney couple on July 29, even though the pair are still very much alive and well.
Julie and Dave Coles, both in their eighties, live in Watermead in Lydney and decided to hold a ‘celebration of life’ party for family and friends.
Daughter Fiona Coles said; “They have taken the very progressive decision to turn the usual traditional funeral arrangements on their head. Instead, they elected to hold a celebration of life party, while they are still around to take part in it. When the time comes, they will have a direct cremation, instead of a full funeral service.
“Family members travelled from all over the country - many from Scotland, where Julie comes from - to help us celebrate.
“The party had many of the traditional elements expected at a funeral with an order of service, songs and a eulogy, renamed ‘the life and times of Julie and Dave’, followed by family and guest tributes, a celebration feast and finishing with music and dancing.
“It was a beautiful and joyful day, with the added bonus of the guests being able to chat to Julie and Dave about their long and interesting lives.”
