A 49-year-old Chepstow man has been arrested after a woman reported seeing a man with an axe in woods.

The woman was running on High Moor Hill, near Caerwent at around 5pm on Thursday (February 6).

The 42-year-old woman, who was unharmed in the incident, ran in the opposite direction and phoned police.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said the man from Bulwark was being held in connection with the incident.

A search was initially carried out by armed police, police dogs and the Gwent Police helicopter but nobody fitting the description was found.

The arrest came following house-to-house inquiries but police are still keen to the talk to anyone who was in the area of Slade Woods between 4pm and 5pm on February 6.
