CROWDS gathered in Coleford on Saturday, August 8 as The Sealed Knot Society took the town back to the 17th century.

The Sealed Knot, which is the oldest reenactment society in the country, and a registered educational charity, put on a stunning display of The Battle of Coleford - which portrayed the events of February 20, 1643.

A Royalist Army, raised around Raglan, was heading to lay siege to Gloucester but diverted to Coleford to destroy a Parliamentary militia regiment consisting of local men, responsible for protecting communities in the Forest of Dean.

It was part of the English Civil War, which broke out August 22, 1642, but the Forest of Dean was largely unaffected until 1643.

Spectators for Saturday’s event got to witness a phenomenal display. Booms of muskets and cannon fire could be heard throughout Coleford, while commentary was provided during the live action.

The performance was authentic and highly educational, complimented by perfect weather for spectators.

The well-run afternoon culminated in a tremendous act of respect. As the bodies of the fallen lay across the roads, the Sealed Knot reminded us all that this is the price of war, and asked the crowd to join a minute’s silence, honouring those who have lost their lives in all conflicts.

Posting to social media, Ian Blythe of the Sealed Knot Society said: “This week’s event was a one-off sponsored by Coleford Town Council who asked that we recreate the battle where it actually happened, on and around the Market Place. It was a huge success enjoyed by both the public and our members.”

It was also planned for a battle reenactment on the Angus Buchanan VC Trust recreational grounds the following day, but this was unexpectedly cancelled. The Sealed Knot Society said this was on the advice of emergency services.
