AN INTREPID group of cub scouts has ‘smashed’ its first outdoor adventure this year, completing a three mile hike on Saturday (March 9).
First Woolaston Cubs successfully completed the Farriers’ Challenge in the Cotswolds, alongside hundreds of other cubs from across the county.
The Cubs set off from the County Scout Centre in Cranham near Stroud.
The trek, which has been running for 10 years, then took them into the surrounding woodland and countryside, including a section of the Cotswold Way.
Group Scout leader, Emma-Jayne Williams, said the Cubs, aged eight to 10, weren’t phased by the difficulties they encountered: “They smashed the hiking challenge. Activities during the hike ranged from building a freestanding structure out of balanced poles to crossing rope bridges over a stream and a test of the Cubs’ first aid knowledge.
“Some parts of the hike were very strenuous and torrential rain the day before the event meant it was muddy underfoot.
“By the time we returned to base it was getting cold and dark, but everyone was still smiling.
“This was a real adventure, and the Cubs relished every challenge that they faced. It was wonderful to see how well they worked together, encouraging and motivating each other along the way.
“One of the best parts of Scouting is being able to join large events like this at a county, national and even international level.”
“We’re looking forward to many more adventures this year, with camping, water sports and other activities planned in line with the Scouting Skills for Life strategy.”
The pack has space for more boys and girls aged eight to ten to join them. Regular weekly meetings are held at Woolaston School on Mondays during term-time, from 6.30pm to 8pm.
