PUPILS from a Tutshill school had a rare opportunity to see an Olympic medal up close when London 2012 gymnast Beth Tweddle dropped by.

Beth, who won bronze on the asymmetric bars at last year's Olympics, was joined by rhythmic gymnast Frankie Jones for the inspirational visit to St John's-on-the-Hill School.

Frankie, who was the first British rhythmic gymnast to compete in an Olympics at London 2012, delighted pupils with an amazing floor routine with ribbon and ball.

Beth spoke about how she got involved in gymnastics and the highs and lows of her career before answering questions from the children.

She and Frankie revealed how they were only told they had been selected for the British Olympic team a few weeks ahead of the competition.

Beth visited Chepstow ahead of her appearance in Cardiff in the Dancing on Ice show after winning the reality TV series on which it is based.

Headmaster of St John's, Nick Folland, said: "There were some great questions from the children – we gained a full insight into the training of elite athletes and we are grateful to Beth and Frankie for giving up their valuable time.

"This was a fantastic opportunity for all at St John's and we would also like to thank Tracey Skirton-Davies, national women's coach at Welsh Gymnastics, for co-ordinating this inspirational visit."
