NEWNHAM’S The Sanctuary Gallery will mark the turning of the seasons with an exhibition from Saturday, September 5.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Allotment’, celebrates a place which brings land, community, and nature together. It draws on the fruitfulness of unlikely creative spaces, where toil in the early part of the year yields an abundance of flowers, fruit and vegetables in late summer and early autumn.

A spokesperson for The Sanctuary Gallery said: “In the lingering summer heat, bees and butterflies flit between flowers, pollinating and perpetuating life, as gardeners tend to their sweet peas, potatoes and lettuces.

“Allotments have greatly enriched our environments, becoming rural oases and green urban corridors for birds, insects and other wildlife. They have also become an important part of the wellness and mindfulness movement, offering growers a space to engage with the soil and the seasons in the peaceful company of our fellow creatures.

“All the artworks in this exhibition are inspired by the things we grow for pleasure, and the habitats created between the shed, flower pot, patio and vegetable patch.”

The exhibition will include watercolours by Kate Osborne, felted creatures by Naomi Beevers, ceramic sculpture by Remon Jephcott, pottery by Amelia Tuttiett and Michelle Lowe, and paintings by Freya Barton, Rosemary Burn, Sarah Jennings, Sandra Haney, Sally Stafford and Mary Liddell.

The Sanctuary Studio and Gallery was established in 2022 by artist Sharon Harvey and exhibits the best in contemporary painting and crafts.

The gallery is within the historical setting at the heart of Newnham-on-Severn, and offers an ever-changing programme of exhibitions, with a broad spectrum of work from figurative to abstract, and represents emerging and established British artists.
