TRADERS in Chepstow are on a bit of a treasure hunt.
It started with an innocent enough question from Mrs June Traynor, a life member of the town's chamber of trade and former owner of June's Garden and Seeds in St Mary Street.
She asked last week's chamber meeting: "Does anyone know what has happened to the silver cup that used to be presented for the best window display?"
The cup in question is about 18 inches high and is the centrepiece of a collection of vintage silver which includes a number of smaller cups and other trophies.
The problem is that it is so long since it was last used that nobody can actually remember where it is.
The best guess it is in a bank vault in the town, possibly Barclays.
Mrs Traynor's husband Peter said: "I think the box of silver was given to Mr Sweeting who was manager of Barclays Bank for safe keeping."
Mrs Traynor told the Chepstow Review: "It was a lovely cup which was given to the chamber by Mr Hall who had a grocer shop in the High Street.
"I won it in the late 1950s but it went back to well before the war. It had silver hearts around the base with the names of the winners on it."
