A RESCUE helicopter from Portland was scrambled to Chepstow on Tuesday afternoon after reports that a man had fallen into the River Wye from the town bridge.

The coastguard helicopter was joined by the Gwent Police helicopter, and search boats from the Severn Area Rescue Association and the South Wales Fire Service.

Gwent Police say they received a call at around 2.50pm.

Members of the Chepstow Coastguard were also alerted by the Swansea Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.

Two ambulances from the Welsh Ambulance Service were also sent to the scene.

The Coastguard helicopter returned to Portland at about 4.30pm and witnesses also reported seeing an air ambulance in the area.
