A CENTURY ago Chepstow businessman Herbert Lewis answered the call of local people campaigning for a town clock by providing one himself.

Ever since it has marked time in the High Street, witness to countless events and many parades.

Dee Griffith, of Herbert Lewis, describes the clock as a familiar Chepstow face and says that since its erection in 1902 it has kept time "pretty accurately."

"We are very proud of it. It is still driven by the original clockwork but we do take care of it and it receives a service every six months," she said.

To mark the clock's 100th birthday the store held a competition asking customers to guess the length of time the mechanism would run from being wound-up at 8.30am on Saturday, July 13.

The hands stopped at 6.20pm the following Saturday – the nearest guess being made by a Hertfordshire visitor who had estimated 8.31pm that evening. The winner picked up vouchers to the value of £50.
