A NURSE who grew up in Bream is returning to the village on Saturday (June 10) with an event to raise funding for a youth project she plans to start in Mexico.

Katy Morgan is organising the Mexican-themed launch of Proyecto Nelhuayotl at the West Dean Centre from 3pm to 6pm and said: “The event is a Mexican-themed fun day with Mexican food and coffee, cakes, games, face paints and music.

“We’ll also have three pinatas filled with sweets, which we’ll be bursting over the course of the afternoon and we’ll have the raffle later on.

“The project is a social reintegration programme, which consists of a non-profit cafe giving jobs, training, life skills and most importantly support, self-esteem and love to 16- to 20-year-olds in Mexico City with a history of homelessness or addiction.

“I’ve worked as a nurse, volunteering in Guatemala and Mexico and I’ve worked in London with young people with substance abuse problems.

“I wanted a more practical project to get involved in and that’s where this idea came from. We’re launching a crowdfunding page at the event and Mexican colleagues, who will work with me on the project, are doing the same in Mexico.”

The event runs from 3pm to 6pm at the West Dean Centre on Saturday, June 10.
