LAST Saturday was the first weekend in September and, by tradition, it’s the time for Pillowell fete.
The fete featured stalls by local organisations as well as performances from Pillowell Silver Band and The Beechnuts, the ukulele group of the Forest U3A (University of the Third Age).
The fete took place on the village recreation and is a fund-raiser for the facility and also Pillowell village hall.
Other attractions included horse shoe throwing, welly wanging, skittles and a guess the weight of the cake competition.
Jean Norton, the clerk to the charity which administers the recreation ground, said: “The land was donated just over 100 years ago by Lord Bledisloe.
“It was opened to the public and for the charity on September 6 1930.
“The charity, the Recreation Ground War Memorial at Pillowell, was set up to administer the land, and make it available for people to use
“So we have a fete, every year that we can, weather permitting but if there's awful weather, we do relocate to the village hall.
“The only years that we've missed were the COVID years and the war years.
“We generate funding effectively as a village team, so the village hall charity benefits and the band and the newsletter.
“It’s pretty much a real local effort.
“The Methodist Church have a stall with a workshop for children and the Lions Club is providing first aid.
“We've also got the Forest Craft Group, for the first time, and that draws people from Yorkley, Pillowell, Bream and Lydney.
They’ve brought a lot of things to demonstrate.
“There’s also the art group which is based at the village hall and they’re demonstrating what they do and running a workshop.”
The village hall art group workshops take place once a month on Fridays.
