POLICE got more than they bargained for when they were called out to a burglary on Plump Hill last week.
Police were called last Thursday at 11.40pm, after two burglars attacked the people living there.
But when officers responded to the couple's emergency call and begun their search of the area they found what they believed to be an underground cannabis factory in the property.
A woman came forward with a head injury and said that she had been assaulted in Trinity Road where she later received treatment from paramedics. Police believe that the assault is connected to the incident.
A Gloucestershire Police spokesman said: "When searching the property, police found an estimated 20 plants under propagation in the house. This meant that the house had to be guarded throughout the weekend by police officers until a structural engineer could examine the property and state it was safe to search thoroughly. Police finally started their search on Monday.
"The two men who broke into the house are not believed to be a threat to the public."
A 41-year-old man and 36-year-old woman, both from Mitcheldean, were arrested on suspicion of drugs manufacture and have been released on police bail pending further enquiries until June 4.
The investigation to trace the burglars is ongoing.
