THE New Year will see Forest Relay for Life fund-raiser Lynne Garner taking on her first London Marathon at what she calls "the grand old age of 52."

"Having been involved in fundraising for cancer research since 1985, initially for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund after losing my mum (a month before her fifty-second birthday), and with Relay For Life Forest of Dean since 2005, I thought it was about time I gave myself a real challenge!" she says.

"A challenge it most certainly is! Although I have always been involved in fitness activities, running is a very different game, and I have only ever 'dabbled' with it in the past.

"But last year I completed two half marathons – it took me a while but I did it and achieved my main aim of running every step of the very hilly courses (everywhere is hilly in the Forest!) – I just want to complete London.

"I am not aiming for a specific time, although I am praying that I cross the line before they begin the sweeping-up process, with God's speed and a trailing wind, ideally in under six hours.

"I know that we are all often approached to make donations. However I figured that if everyone I know could manage to give me the minimum JustGiving donation of £2, then I would be well on my way to reaching my £2,000 target, along with other plans I have to raise some cash, and it would make every step of those 26 miles much more bearable!

"After my dad's cancer journey last year, along with the loss of my grandmother, two aunts, one uncle, three school friends since April and my next door neighbour – a sad, similar story for many of us I am sure – then I am so inspired to train hard and do this, and to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.
