A FOUNDER and volunteer of a rescue group with almost half a century of service under his belt had his achievements recognised on Sunday, April 28.
Jim Hewitt, chair of trustees for Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) and one of its founder members, was awarded his Certificate of Achievement for 45 years of service to SARA.
One of the Beachley lifeboats, launched in 2015, is named after Jim, who was presented with his certificate by current CEO Mark Carwardine.
Mark said: “Jim’s drive and passion for the organisation is amazing, even after 45 years.
“The local communities that use the waters, cliffs and other outdoor attractions in our area owe Jim huge gratitude for helping SARA to provide the service it has done over all these years.”
Over 50 members attended SARA’s AGM, held in Gloucester, and the day included workshops on fundraising and joint lifeboat training.
“In typical SARA style,” Mark added, “a number of the volunteers who attended were then called out at around 10pm to support a police operation in the Cheltenham area.
“The task was to search for a vulnerable and missing lady after a family member raised an alarm, however she was located – safe and well – by the police whilst en route.”
