MONMOUTHSHIRE County Council is spreading festive cheer for the third year running by offering shoppers free parking.
As part of its initiative to boost retail trade in Chepstow, Monmouth and Abergavenny shoppers can park for free in the towns on three Saturdays before Christmas. The dates include November 30, December 7 and December 14.
The initiative will cost the council around £17,000 in lost parking revenue but it is reported that this will be "more than offset by the boost to local businesses". Retailers have reported increased sales during the free parking period in previous years and car parks have been full to the brim.
Cllr Phil Hobson, cabinet member with responsibility for car parking, said: "I'm really pleased that we've once again been able to work with local traders to provide free parking in the run up to Christmas. These are difficult times, so it's important that Monmouthshire County Council plays its part in ensuring the continued vibrancy and success of our town centres. It's been very positive working with the local traders' representatives to make sure that the dates are the best ones for the people who will directly benefit."
He added: "We all know that our towns have an incredible range of shops, along with some great cafes and restaurants for those seeking a break from shopping. And if anyone from the North Pole wants to shop here too, we can arrange free parking for the sleigh and somewhere for the reindeer."
