TWO Forest students who were almost killed in a car crash last March have reconstructed the life-changing day for a film to improve driving standards among young people.

Invincible Minds features Adam James and Louis Turner who were travelling along Forest Road, between Lydney and Whitecroft, when their car struck a pothole and ended up plunging 20ft down an embankment.

Louis, 19, who was a passenger in the Vauxhall Corsa and was airlifted to hospital in Bristol, said: “Going back to the scene reminded me how much the crash has affected me.

“I feel that no matter how many years go by, going past the crash site will always haunt me as I think what could have been, if I wasn’t so lucky.”

The film, which is part of a roadshow, also includes testimonies from survivors living with serious injury, family members who have lost loved-ones, drivers who have been prosecuted, emergency services and hospital staff.

It has been funded by Gloucestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Martin Surl, as part of his drive for more safe and sociable driving.

Mr Surl said: “It is very brave of the boys to put themselves through what they have and I am very grateful. Some might question the need, but this sort of emotive education is proven to be an effective approach.

“Our research reinforces the need to provide preventative interventions for young drivers. It focuses on how young people behave when they are in a car and why they act as they do.

“The evidence points towards low awareness of the risks, inexperience and over-confidence, in-car distractions and issues around self-esteem. The roadshow will address those topics.”

•FIVE free advanced motoring courses for drivers up to the age of 25 are still available.

Since 2014 Gloucestershire Advanced Motorists has received funding from Martin Surl, PCC for Gloucestershire, to provide the courses free-of-charge in a bid to improve road safety. Courses normally cost £149.

Group member Jean Sheraton, of St Briavels, said: “Fifteen of the potential 20 places have been allocated.

“This is a great opportunity for young drivers in the Forest to increase their ability and make a difference to road safety in our area. Interested young drivers should hold a full driving licence, be under the age of 26, and have a Gloucestershire address. Our contact telephone number is 01453 843700.”
