IT poured down. At times it was torrential, but that didn't spike spirits at the first Wyedean School festival for 20 years.

Master chefs from the 1st Battalion, The Rifles, based at Beachley barracks joined pupils, parents and many locals from the community at Wyedean School for the first event of this kind in 20 years. Everyone had an opportunity to taste food cooked from ration packs in return for a Swift and Bold Wristband which raised a total of £300 for the appeal.

Coping despite the rain, all departments within Wyedean made a huge effort to take part showcasing their talents in music, drama and art. The design and technology pupils made their own games which proved very popular, and cookery students sold homemade cakes and preserves. Local producers showcased their food and drink along with a number of art and craft stalls. Gloucester College joined Wyedean for the day providing beauty treatments and offering advice on courses to students.

WO2 Damien Marsden later announced the winners and runners up of the Recipe competition. Runners up received a Recipe File donated by Rob Rees, The Cotswold Chef, and all 12 winners will visit the barracks when the company return from Afghanistan to help master chefs cook their winning recipes and join officers and soldiers for lunch. Michelin Star and Great British Menu chefs James Sommerin and Tom Kerridge along with Adam Henson from Countryfile have also donated recipes for the file.
