NUCLEAR test veteran, Dennis Hayden is leading a talk on the dangers of low-level radiation from nuclear power stations.

The Lydney man who is a member of the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association will be at The Annexe in Lydney on Thursday (May 16) discussing the evidence that the day-to-day emissions from large nuclear power stations are dangerous to the public.

Dennis was among 20,000 other servicemen between 1952 and 1967 who participated in British nuclear weapons experiments by the military to discover the health effects of being exposed to ionizing radiation. Many of those who took part have suffered ill-health and death as a result.

The meeting, called by STAND (Severnside Together Against Nuclear Development) will also hear the latest news from speakers about the proposed nuclear power station to be built by Hitachi at Oldbury.

Among the other items there will be a point-by-point analysis of the letter that many local residents have received from Horizon/Hitachi; news of the stance that South Gloucestershire County Council have taken against the proposal; the viability of alternative sources of energy; and a report of the meeting STAND had with Horizon representatives.

The public can ask questions and offer their opinions as to the way forward to try to halt the proposal.

The meeting starts at 7.30pm.
