NEW broadleaf saplings are being planted on Saturday at Linear park, Cinderford, in memory of one of the park's enthusiasts who died in November.

Gloria Rogers, nee Sparrow, worked with the regeneration partnership on the park between 1996 and 2001 as part of the Linear park Environment Group, of which she was a founder member.

"Her health suffered in this time – she never did anything by halves," said a spokesperson.

Among the trees and bushes which are going to be planted on Saturday from 10am are several hazels.

"Gloria loved the Forest itself, especially at nutting time, and during her last illness she was asking for nuts from the Forest which she could no longer collect herself," said the spokesperson.

"Everyone who knew Gloria is welcome to join us at the Ruspidge Halt car park to help plant the trees."

Gloria was born in Burma, where her father was with British forces based there, and she came to the Forest with her family at the age of two.

She went to school in Cinderford, and after marrying Phil Rogers and travelling abroad with him as an army wife, and raising two children, she returned to the Forest, this time living in Broadwell.

The Linear Park Environment Group hols regular work days on the first Saturday of each month – for more details call Andrew Maliphant on 01594 823219.
