LYDNEY Town Council is appealing to the public for vigilance following a spate of vandalism in the town’s popular Bathurst Park.
Bathurst Park and Recreation Trust chair, Cllr Harry Ives said: “For several months, Bathurst Park has faced persistent problems with vandalism. Despite great efforts by groundsman, nothing is safe come nightfall. Our community flower beds have been uprooted and thrown aside, our Victorian fencing was dislodged, displaced and damaged and our newly re-roofed bandstand had burnt initials and graffiti after a single night. A bench has also been removed due to damage.
“Bathurst Park is a staple of Lydney’s history, and is valued by many. For many residents, it is a source of great pride. But for a small minority, this sentiment runs thin.
“For as long as vandalism and anti-social behaviour remain a problem, the installation of new equipment will require second thoughts. The solution is vigilance and a respect for public assets. It is, after all, local taxpayers who foot the bill for repairs. So next time you’re passing the park after dark, please keep an eye out. The police non-emergency number is 101 and a few minutes on the phone could save thousands in repairs.”
