WHILE I am all for Wyedean students and other pedestrians using the A48 bridge to be safe, I think reducing the speed limit is a pointless exercise. What really needs to happen is for metal railings be put along the pavement.
Damage can still be done if a car is travelling at 30mph. At least with railings in place, there is more of a chance that no-one will get hurt.
Also, maybe a lesson in Highway Code or road safety is needed for students? Walking three abreast along the pavement, so one person is virtually on the road, other people overtaking slower pedestrians by walking onto the road, pushing friends in playfulness are not sensible. It is also illegal to ride a bicycle on the pavement, but that doesn't seem to stop the kids. Is it so hard to push your bike that little way along the bridge?!
Not only would railings keep the children safe, but also the many other pedestrians who use the bridge, especially those who walk home after a night out!
Even though I personally don't walk across the bridge, I do feel something needs to be done, but reducing the speed limit isn't the answer.
