TWO young people from Coalway have scooped prizes in a national art competition organised by the BBC1 television programme SMart Art.
David (6) and Sophie Mulford (11) took up the challenge of producing a work of art on the theme of depicting the outside from the inside – such as a view from a window or arch, or a known landscape.
David, who attends Berry Hill Primary School, came out top of the under-7s section with his view of his friends in a tree house, while Sophie, a Lakers pupil, was highly commended in the 11-14s section for her collage of a garden using illustrations cut from gardening magazines.
"David was delighted with his win because it was an opportunity to get all his friends in on the act," said proud mother Pauline Mulford.
"And of course Sophie is very pleased too because she was up against 14 year-olds.
"And even their sister Hannah, 10 , was in on the act because they filmed us all in the gallery and Hannah helped get everyone organised."
David was actually shown in the programme before Christmas and both he and his sister received a bumper goody bag of art materials for their efforts.
The paintings are on show at The Study Gallery in Poole, Dorset.
