A 1960s almshouse building in Monmouth is taking a tumble to make way for new almshouse flats and luxury homes.
Bristol Charities – which became the trustee of the 400-year-old William Jones's Almshouse Charity last year – and housing specialist Lovell, held a special ceremony to mark the demolition of the redundant almshouse building, which dates from 1961.
Lovell is demolishing the building and will build a modern new almshouse made up of 24 one-bedroom flats in its place, as well as an additional 10 luxury homes for sale. The new gated development of the almshouse flats and housing for sale will be known as Cwrt William Jones.
Bristol Charities specialises in providing almshouse accommodation and services for older people and it has been working to redevelop the site which will include 24 'independent living' flats for older people in need.
The scheme will be built to a similar specification as Bristol Charities' successful almshouse development in Brentry, Bristol, which was completed in 2009 and is still receiving positive feedback from both residents and visitors.
The properties in Monmouth will feature nine two-bedroom homes and one three-bedroom home. Lovell has teamed up with local estate agents Parrys and will be releasing the first homes for sale later in the spring (details from Lovell on 02920 814081 or Parrys on 01600 713030).
David W. Jones, chief executive of Bristol Charities, says: "It is satisfying that the 19 units within former 1960s accommodation, which fell short of modern needs and aspirations, will be demolished to make way for 24 one-bedroom flats, specially designed to meet the requirements of older people.
"As with other projects with which we are involved, it is also pleasing that the objectives laid down by merchant William Jones, almost 400 years ago, will continue to provide for local people."
Lovell regional director Nick Kurobasa said: "It is very exciting to see demolition beginning, preparing the way for our team to start building modern state-of-the-art almshouse accommodation for older residents as well as high-quality new homes for sale.
Nick Kurobasa: "We are delighted to be working with Bristol Charities to launch this latest chapter in the long history of the William Jones's Almshouse charity in Monmouth."
