A DAD and his daughter proved a cut above with a special haircut for charity on her seventh birthday.

Dan and Emily Quinton from Newent both had their hair cut for the Little Princess Trust at the town’s CUT Above hair salon in Church Street.

The charity uses donated hair to make wigs for youngsters undergoing cancer treatment.

And Dan, 34, who last had a hair cut in April 2015, said: “It started out as bit of a joke when I was ribbed at work, as I hadn’t had my hair cut for some time.

“It occurred to me that I could grow it longer, then have it cut off and donate it to raise money for charity.

“All I needed was a charity and I did some research and eventually settled on The Little Princess Trust. I then set up a Just Giving page to collect donations”.

Daughter Emily bravely decided she would also join dad in having her locks cut off.

And on the Newent Federation pupil’s seventh birthday, they headed to the CUT Above hair salon, where their hair was braided before being cut to make it easier to make wigs.

The salon also donated £100 to Dan’s Just Giving page, which has raised more than £550 to date.

Dan is no stranger to fundraising, once having undertaken a sponsored run in a pink hippo ‘onesie’.

Jackie Anderson, owner of CUT Above, said: “We have done this sort of thing often over the 27 years we have been here, but it is the first time we have cut off hair for a father and daughter at the same time.

“Emily was a very brave girl to have this done and it is great to see children of that age seeing what can be done for charity.

“It is a real pleasure to help people to donate to such worthy causes especially when one of the donors is only just seven years old.”

Dan says the hair has now been posted off to the charity headquarters for onward transmission to China where the wigs are made up.
