THE classic Severn wind – a gusting south-westerly – made Lydney's little harbour a safe haven for small vessels on Saturday and the perfect place for a friendly family town festival knees-up.

The event was held in conjunction with a celebration marking 50 years of the town's yacht club. From the hugely appreciated and talented Forest Brass to bagpipes and every type of music in between, there was plenty going on for the large and appreciative crowds that visited throughout the day.

Exhibits included displays by the Forest of Dean Local History Society and The Friends of Purton and there were a variety of stalls and, of course, an opportunity to go sailing. An example of putcher making was given by Eric Jackson and there was story telling by Tim Oakes.

Festival organiser Derek Biddle described the day as very successful.

"The weather steadily improved and visitors came out in force. The music was for all tastes and was very well received. It proved a very successful day," he said.
