FURTHER to my letter printed in The Review July 15 under the heading 'Taxing troubles'.

In order for me to compile my Tax Return for the tax years 2010/11 and have the details assessed correctly I have been dealt with by the following offices.

• PAYE coding notice sent from Bradford.

• Self Assessment sent from Newcastle Upon Tyne.

• Letter received from Liverpool informing me that they have received a copy of my Tax Assessment but no covering letter (which is not surprising considering I did not send a letter to Liverpool).

I have received a letter from Edinburgh Complaint Service informing me that they are sorry to hear about the problems I have had in dealings with HMRC. A request has been made for my papers to be forwarded to Edinburgh but due to the high level of complaints received it will take 35 days before my complaint can be looked at.

I did not send a letter of complaint to Newcastle, Liverpool or Edinburgh but I have sent one to Cardiff complaints team but not on the date shown by Edinburgh.

I am the 'official agent' for my husband but he has received a coding notice showing that he will get the Married Couple's Allowance for 2011/12. I have previously submitted the appropriate form transferring the Married Couple's Allowance to me as my husband's income does not exceed his personal allowance.

According to the news headlines on BBC, HMRC are reducing the staff by 10,000 and a number of offices are to close.

The staff at HMRC are struggling to deal with pensioners' simple tax matters. God help us if staff levels are reduced and offices closed.

Only a few years ago one office dealt with coding notices and tax returns. Now some bright spark has decided we can go anywhere in the United Kingdom and have second class service.

Fortunately I have written to Mr. Harper M.P and hope that he can find out exactly what is going on at HMRC offices. If a fresh coding notice is sent to me before I can get the errors corrected on the assessment I have received then it will be costing me £86 a month until the problem is corrected.
