BRIGHT sunshine and a stunning collection of vehicles of every make and colour drew crowds to Lydney's Road and Rail Show at Norchard.
"We had at least 2,350 visitors – not quite a record – to see a wonderful array of exhibits," said Dean Forest railway commercial director John White.
Awards were presented by the Mayor of Lydney, councillor Mrs Valerie Hobman.
Results were: Norchard Cup for the best exhibit in the show: Mr D.A. Norris, Blakeney, for a Peugeot 55TN light delivery motor tricycle; Chairman's Cup for best stationary engine: Ian Skuse, Congresbury, for engine by Bernard of Paris; highly commended (equal) in same class: F.G. South, Worle, Weston-super-Mare, for a Stuart gas engine and T.W. Heath, Yeovil, 1915 Brownwall engine.
Forest Shield for buses and coaches: Cotswold PSV Group, Stroud, for Bristol LL5G single decker, 1938; highly commended (equal) in the same class: Chepstow Classic Buses for 1928 Leyland TDI double-deck, Bristol Vintage Bus Group for 1948 Leyland PDI double-deck, and Wayne Roberts, Pontypool, for 1940 Leyland Leopard single-deck.
Parkend Cup for pre-1940 cars: D. Thomas, Monmouth, for 1929 Austin 12/4 Clifton Tourer; highly commended M. Grimmett, Kingswinford, West Midlands, for 1933 Austin 12/4 Open Tourer; Dean Forest Railway Society Cup for post-war cars: D. Woolley, Newport, for 1948 Lanchester LD10 saloon; highly commended (equal): A.J. Atkins, Sully, S Glamorgan, for 1957 Vauxhall Victor Super Saloon, and Roy Daniels, Cheltenham, for a 1961 Vauxhall Velox PA Saloon.
Whitecroft Cup for commercial and military vehicles: R. Cresswell, Hilderstone, Staffs, for 1961 AEC Mustang dropside truck; highly commended D.H. Jockell, Bredwardine, for Citroen 1969 H van in colours of Alencon, France fire brigade and in service there until 1996!
Lydney Shield for motor cycles: R.W. Rush, Bream, for 1952 BSA Golden Flash and sidecar; highly commended: M. Bartlett, Cirencester, for 1945 Ariel VG 500; Brian Chaplin Cup for agricultural exhibits: D. Ousley, Tatworth, Somerset, for 1961 Massey Ferguson tractor; highly commended: K. Phillips, Oldland Common, Bristol, for circa 1960 Lea Francis Unihorse tractor.
Bill Hobman presented the Bill Hobman Trophy for the most original preservation project to Brian Mortimer, of Trowbridge, for a collection of eight bicycles dating from 1884 to 1939 which included an 1884 Humber Ordinary penny-farthing.
The judges also presented a special highly commended award to Rob and Queenie Ridgeway of Gloucester for three Vauxhall car exhibits and the period costume display.
George Locker presented the rally manager's award, the Reg Crudge Memorial Trophy (for man not machine) to the Dean Forest Diesel Multiple Unit Group for their presentation of their diesel heritage multiple unit now extended to four coaches, and the Dean Forest Railway Society's Steam Motive Power Team for their excellent passenger and freight services.
