'ESSENTIAL' road resurfacing work gets underway at Alvington this Sunday (October 26) for a week.

The work to the stretch of road on the A48 between the Swan Pub and start of the dual carriageway, on the Lydney side of the village, will take place between 7.30am and 4.30pm.

Due to the width of the road, it will be closed during these hours but will reopen all day on Saturday, November 1. Access for emergency vehicles will still be in place and pedestrian routes won't be affected.

Motorists will be diverted from Tutshill via St Briavels and Bream to Lydney.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways, said: "This resurfacing work will make a big difference to the stretch of road on the A48. However I do appreciate that works like this do inconvenience people, so I'd like to thank them for their patience."

Local county councillor for Alvington, Cllr Patrick Molyneux, added: "This resurfacing work will be great for the area and I'm sure local residents and businesses will welcome the improvements."
