A THREE mile per hour crash brought rush hour traffic to a standstill for two hours on Monday evening.
Police had tried to stop the 46-year-old driver, from Gloucester, before the collision after he was spotted around 4.30pm allegedly driving erratically along the A48 towards Chepstow.
It is believed the car was driving between four and 10mph during the incident before colliding with an HGV at around two to three miles per hour.
A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: "Police were on the scene at the time of the collision, near Woolaston, after trying to stop the vehicle beforehand. The whole incident happened over the course of an hour.
"The driver of the silver VW Golf had a medical episode hence his erratic behaviour. He was taken by ambulance to Lydney Hospital for a check-up. The HGV was from Lydney."
A commuter travelling from Lydney towards Caldicot, who didn't wish to be named, said: "We reached the scene at Alvington around 5.10pm and didn't arrive to our destination until near 7pm. It was a nightmare."
There were no injuries and the road reopened at 6.20pm.
