YOUNG musicians and singers showed their talents in an annul concert for a local Foodbank.

Every year, students of Caldicot School and local primary schools come together for the fund-raising evening for the town’s Foodbank.

The concert featured a range of styles from traditional – and not so traditional – versions of carols to displays of outstanding musicianship.

The finale for the evening was a medley of music from The Polar Express with pupils of Caldicot School joining a choir made up of pupils from local primary schools.

Caldicot Foodbank chairman David Flint paid tribute to the school and the wider community for their support.

He said: “Last year we collected more than £14,000 worth of food that had been donated from the people of this area.

“I think that is a huge tribute to the people of Caldicot and the surrounding area.

“In addition, more than £1,000 was donated to us and £700 came from this school at this concert last year.

“We quite often run out of basic items and the money allows us to go out and buy them.

“Having cash in the bank means we can also respond to specific needs and over the last few weeks we’ve used the cash we had to buy items to help those who are impoverished so they can have as near normal a Christmas as pssible.

“We have supported around 750 people this past year – each person receiving about £21 worth of food and basic items of toiletries and household necessities such as toothbrushes and detergents.”

“People are referred by accredited agencies such as housing associations, health visitors and mental health charities.

“We are in contact with about 30 such organisations.

“We are here to help those who have short-term problems and we only provide three parcels in a six-month period.

“We have been delighted to have three students from this school over the last 12 months helping us as part of their Welsh Baccalaureate.”

The school has also held food collections.
