I RECENTLY attended a meeting at the Annex, Lydney about the proposals for the development of the Oldbury Nuclear Power Station.

After a very well researched presentation by the key campaigners it was evident that a huge number of the many people who attended (over 80) were very much against the proposals.

The following concerns were clearly outlined by the presenting panel:

•Issues of waste and how it would be managed long-term

•Health and safety of residents living near nuclear power stations and the possible evidence for unusual aggregations of childhood cancers in populations

•The impact of the massive cooling towers on the local landscape and

•The probability and implications of serious flooding of the site due to the tidal nature of the River Severn.

HOOF, Hands Off Our Forest, attracted considerable press coverage and support of local people. It was a highly successful campaign.

I would like to urge you and your paper to profile the developments of this group as it emerges to give the population of the Forest of Dean a similar voice across the region and nationally.
