HARD on the heels of the arson attack which destroyed the pavilion in Lydney's Bathurst Park, the town's band says it is in despair at the activities of vandals who have "systematically" ripped apart their headquarters.

They say that as fast as they make repairs the vandals strike again.

The destruction began about seven months ago with windows being smashed.

And that has been a continuing saga, so great that band members have lost count of the number of times they have replaced them.

Now the vandals, described by band vice-chairman Des Yeates, as the "yob element of our society", have turned their attention to the roof.

After causing serious but repairable damage by stone throwing, they have now climbed onto the roof to smash holes in it.

Mr Yeates said: "This has resulted in the partial destruction of the new ceiling and the new flooring which the band had bought and members put in themselves.

"Previous damage we have been able to repair, but the latest attack means to whole roof needs replacing before we can even start to refurbish the inner fabric."

The band say letters to the police have brought sympathetic replies - "but that does not help to repair the damage or succeed in preventing further damage."

In a letter to the Review the band asks: "Why are we the target?"

"We try to be of service to the community. We parade on Armistice Day, give our services at charity concerts and visit the local hospital and Rodley House at Christmas time. We have two evenings a week devoted to learners and junior sections and two nights for senior practice," they say.

The band offers its sympathy to the Bathurst Park staff who had repainted the park's pavilion shortly before it was gutted by fire and asks: "Has it always got to be the yobs who have their civil rights fought for by the do-gooders?

"Don't we have, as law-abiding and tax-paying members of society, any rights? What is the answer? As fast as we repair the yobs strike. Does no-one see anything?"
