A BATTING collapse from the 33rd over gave Newent the edge over Ruardean Hill on Saturday.

Ruardean were 163 for 4 at the end of the 33rd over, but disaster struck by the 41st over as the remaining wickets fell thick and fast.

The final four overs of the innings were passed to Newent which cost Ruardean a win, as Newent were knocked off for seven wickets in the 47th over.

Newent's Edgell was the top scorer of the day, hitting 54 and from Ruardean Nick Jones hit a respectable 46.

Club spokesman Richard Hoult said: "We had a strong side out in both of the last two games we played, but we let ourselves down.

"We have had a few disappointing performances recently, but it is up to the captain to decide what we should do next."

But the future looks bright for Ruardean, with four or five under 15s playing in the seconds team and the Sunday league.

An influx of young blood is coming up through the ranks with an under 15s team and an under 13s run jointly with Cinderford.

But the team's next match will be tinged with sadness as they are planning a minute's silence to remember the anniversary of the death of Heywood School PE teacher Jamie Davis.
