THERE was a big turn-out for Aylburton Carnival on Saturday (July 13) with the village marking two significant anniversaries.

Aylburton School, which is celebrating 150 years in 2019, had a Victorian schoolroom theme for their float.

And members of the village Women’s Institute dressed up in costume from the last 100 years to celebrate its centenary.

The school float was declared the best and won the Bledisloe Trophy and the WI were second.

The third float in the procession was based on The Greatest Showman and was created by the Newman and Rickard families.

The top walking entry was Sandra Sargent as Mary Poppins, and the single entry was won by Les Meakin who was roasting in a chicken costume.

They were joined by a lifeboat from SARA

The procession started at Taurus Crafts and made its way along the A48 headed by the Tewkesbury Boys’ Brigade band and the Cinderford-based Harmony Twirlstars.

On the main field, modern met traditional, with attractions such as the coconut shy and skittles as well as laser clay pigeon shooting.

Also in attendance were members of Lydney Guides who are fund-raising for a special trip to Switzerland in February.

There was also music from Forest of Dean Brass.

Mark Sargent, of the organising committee, said: “It was a fantastic day – I have never seen so many people out supporting the carnival.

“It was very rewarding for the small committee that organises the carnival.”

There was also an exhibition of old photographs relating to the Aylburton School 150th anniversary.

The money raised will go to groups in the village.
