THE bluebells are blooming early in the Forest to create the best display for years, say local experts.

The annual arrival of beds of bluebells across the Forest attracts thousands of visitors each year but, according to Forest of Dean tour guide Peter Colley, they have come into bloom around two weeks early this year because of the fine spring.

"The mild wet winter, the good spring and the lack of Forest sheep 'nibbling' the leaves as they appear has meant the likelihood of the best display in many parts of the Forest of Dean for many years," he said.

"Some displays are easily found but others require local knowledge to discover their beauty."

The Forest of Dean's specially-trained guides provide guided tours of areas of attraction in the Forest and know the best places to find a truly stunning display.

"Visitors will find superb displays of bluebells if they turn left at the Speech House Hotel when travelling from Cinderford to Coleford on the A4151, for instance," Peter added.

"The minor road from Wenchford, under Blackpool Bridge, towards Soudley also gives a good place to see the bluebells from a car."

However, the Guides have developed a number of guided walks and tours for visitors keen to see 'hidden' displays. Details are available from Peter Colley, telephone 01594 832929.

A map of the best sites is also on show at the Beechenhurst picnic site.
