I?NOTICED that in a recent issue (July 25), Cllr Gethyn Davies proposed that, with older people in mind, more two-bedroom bungalows be built. Has he considered that bungalows are the least thermally efficient type of residence?
As an older person (I am 85) living in a mid-terrace house, I greatly appreciate the warmth coming through the walls in winter from adjacent houses and they benefit in not losing heat through those walls to outer space.
For people who cannot negotiate stairs, a garden flat would be ideal or a flat accessed by a lift or a terrace house with a stairlift.
The question is whether the electricity used by these lofts would be more than that saved by thermal efficiency.
The only advantage bungalows might have is that their relatively large roof area would make the installation of solar panels worthwhile which is not always the case with small, mid-terrace houses. Anyway, please do not rush into advocating the building of bungalows until you have all the relevant figures to consider.
