THERE was plenty going on at St Briavels Carnival on Saturday afternoon (June 11).

Floats and fancy dress competitors assembled at the Tump for judging at 1.30pm, then the procession made its way through the village to the playing fields.

Organiser Tessa Charley said: “We had fairground rides, skittles and a coconut shy as well as cake, plant and craft stalls.

“We were entertained by Chepstow Community Jazz Band, Djabhot Drumming Group, country dancers from Ellwood School and a flash mob Zumba demonstration from Wye Valley Zumba dancers.”

“The standard of floats and fancy dress this year again was exceptional. It was a tremendous turn out for such a small village and we know that the children really enjoy taking part.”

St Briavels Playgroup won first prize for the best float with The Bake Off. Second went to St Briavels School juniors with The Life and Times of William Shakespeare and third was awarded to the infants for Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot.

First prize in the fancy dress group entry went to Millie Connor, Penny Adams, Mollie Chiswell, Olivia Smith, Megan Goodwin, Xenia Bennett and Mia Worgan as Alice in Wonderland.

Winners of the 11 to 18 years category and winners of the Janet Parry Cup for fun factor, including the two dogs they dressed up, were Nia Jones and Izzy Searle as Two Little Red Riding Hoods with dogs Hetty and Nancy as two wolves.

First prize in the seven to 10 age group went to Alice Sloper and Lottie Goodwin as 80s cheerleaders.

Winner of the under-sevens category and Edward Page Memorial Cup were George and Ella Watson as The Flintstones. Runner-up was Arthur Lawrence as a pirate.

Adult fancy dress winner and winner of the Dyke Stephens Cup was Janet Hall as ‘zero waste.’

Tessa said: “The committee would like to thank everyone who helped to make the day possible and to offer special thanks to our helpers, sponsors and those who kindly donated prizes for the raffle.

“In recent years, we have made significant improvements to the facilities on the playing fields with the installation of new play equipment and fitness equipment for adults.

“The proceeds of this year’s event will be used for the continued upkeep and improvement of these facilities.”
