THE Review 'Opinion' rightly draws attention to the traffic problems in Chepstow and with additional house building planned the present situation will be even worse and as stated a practical solution will be required sooner than later.
May I repeat a suggestion made in 2011, which may not have reached the right quarters?
Re-direct the west bound traffic out of Chepstow on an upgraded road from the Tesco traffic lights to the railway station and in the vicinity of the footbridge construct a small bridge crossing the railway to take a new road through the disused shunting yard to the beginning of the railway cutting.
Carry the road over the rail tracks on steel trestles finally descending to an embankment taking the road under M48 Wye Bridge and linking to Newhouse roundabout.
Carrying the road over rail on trestles was used on Britannia Bridge at Anglesey on which I was employed as a draughtsman, hence the idea.
There are several advantages to the suggestion. Steep hills are avoided and the pollution problem would disappear. The route uses land which has little use and would involve very little inconvenience but would be an attractive entrance to the town. Further development in the old shunting yard could include parking, coach station etc.
It would be costly but Newport looks like getting a relief road and it would not be as expensive as some high speed trains.
