AN EVENT on Saturday brought Cinderford’s history to the fore, with contributions from many community groups.

Town councillor, Mark Turner, organised the event in the council chambers in the Bell Vue Centre.

He said: “I had the idea to do this a couple of years ago. This time we had contributions from local schools, the Wesley players, memorabilia from the Meredith and Drew biscuit factory, newspaper archives and plenty more. The event was a real success. Hundreds of people came during the day with people still arriving right up until we closed.

“The highlight was the Cinderford town clock which was lost for over 40 years. Someone brought it along last year, as he had kept it in his garage. It was built in 1899 and was four feet across, we’re trying to find a way to bring it back to the town for safe-keeping.

“There was a massive interest in our local history and it was great to see people reminiscing. Some met old school friends or neighbours they hadn’t seen for years. We’re holding the event again next year and would love to hear from anyone who has something that they would like to see or that they would like to show people.”
