TWO classic car fans died in a horror Bank Holiday collision with an ambulance.
The accident reportedly involving a Ford 1922 Model T car happened shortly after 6am on Sunday (August 25) on the A49 road in Peterstow near Ross-on-Wye, close to the Pengethley Garden Centre.
The classic car driver and his male passenger, who have not been identified by police, were declared dead at the scene. One of the men has since been named in a memorial tribute as Jason Allen, 49, of Lea Bailey.
The ambulance was not responding to a 999 call before the crash – and two medics hurt in the accident are not thought to have suffered serious injuries.
The wrecked vehicles were cleared from the scene on Sunday, but skid marks on the road from one side of the highway across the neighbouring carriageway, a burnt verge and hedge and broken glass indicate the force of the crash.
A man and woman with two children left floral tributes at the scene but declined to comment.
One card read: “Jason, thoughts are with your family. Another life taken too soon. The Coopers.”
Another tribute read: “Rabbit, I will never forget all the memories we all had, you taught me to live life to the full. See you soon, love Lauren.”
Another added: “Rabbit, another one gone too soon. We are all heartbroken.”
A further tribute said: “Will never forget you Rabbit. A great mate, love Clive, George, Elsie and Margaret.”
A friend of the driver who died revealed at the scene that they were travelling in a classic Ford 1922 Model T when it crashed with the ambulance.
He said: “I don’t know exactly what happened and don’t want to say any more other than I’m devastated.”
Sergeant Dan Pou-cher, of West Mercia Police, said an inquiry was underway and urged witnesses or people with dashcam footage to contact officers.
He said: “Next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with the families of those affected.”
Four ambulances, three paramedic officers and an emergency doctor from the Mercia Accident Rescue Service dashed to the scene of the crash.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “The two occupants of the car sadly died at the scene.
“Two ambulance staff received treatment by ambulance colleagues on scene for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Hereford County Hospital for further assessment.
“The trust will work closely with officers from West Mercia Police on the investigation which is already under way.”
