FOREST of Dean Commoners are being urged to make sure all their sheep are properly marked and tagged.
The advice comes ahead of moves by the Forestry Commission to round up and check sheep being commoned in and around local villages. Stock which has not been correctly marked will be impounded and only returned on payment of a fee.
Commoners secretary Mick Holder said members should make sure their stock was clearly marked with pitch, ear tagged, and complied with all the local bylaws.
Mr Holder said: "The checks will take place throughout August. Of course, if everything is in order no-one need worry. But commoners should be aware that the cost can be prohibitive if sheep are impounded."
