WHEN John and Joan Green got married, Prime Minister Clement Attlee had narrowly held onto Downing Street in a General Election and rationing was still a feature of British life.
The couple tied the knot on February 25 1950 in Neath, South Wales.
Their family held a celebration at the Euroclydon nursing home in Drybrook where they have lived since November.
Mr Green is 90 and Mrs Green was 89 on Friday (February 21).
Thanks to modern technology, their daugher Lynfa was able to join the celebrations via a video link from New Zealand.
The couple have five children – Valerie, Janet, Lynfa, Philip and Paul, 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
John worked as a miner as a young man and had various jobs throughout his life.
Joan worked as a carer and then qualified as a nurse working at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
In the later years of their working lives, they worked together managing care homes in Bristol, Cornwall Devon and Sussex.
When they retired they moved to the Forest to be closer to family.
They moved to Euroclydon from Goode Court sheltered housing complex in Lydney.
Daughter Janet said: “We thank God for the love and guidance they have given over the years.
“We are delighted to celebrate with them as they reach this 70-year milestone
