THIS is an emergency call to Forest of Dean cake-makers...get baking!

Jenny Roberts, champion Forest fund-raiser for Great Oaks Dean Forest Hospice, at Coleford, has run into difficulties baking cakes to be sold in the tea room at the Gloucestershire Brass Band Association's Brass Band Day being held at Highnam Court on July 7.

The occasion will mark the 75th anniversary of the Association and will be one of the biggest banding days ever held locally. All the profit will be shared between Great Oaks and the Pied Piper Appeal.

Jenny's problems began on Sunday when she started a cake-making marathon to provide mouth-watering goodies for the tea room.

" I'm usually pretty good at baking cakes but I thought something was wrong when my first couple were burnt. It happened again and that's when I realised there was a problem with the oven," she said.

Now Jenny has issued an emergency call to cake-makers. She wants 50 by July 6!

"I'm hoping everyone will rally round, get mixing, and get me out of trouble. This is all about baking your favourite cake for a very good cause. Fifty cakes sounds a lot, but I'm sure it can be achieved," she said.

If you can bake a cake for the big day ring Jenny on Dean 811910 and she will arrange for it to be picked up. Alternatively drop yours in at the hospice shops in Cinderford, Coleford, Lydney, Newent or Newnham. You can also leave your tasty treat at the Review office.

Jenny would appreciate a call if you are baking, "It will let me know how many I will have to bake to make up the 50," she says.

•The Highnam Court Brass Band Day is already being referred to as one of the biggest musical events ever in the county. There will be over 700 musicians and each one of the 20 bands will, in turn, give a 20 minute performance culminating in a massed bands "big blow" involving hundreds of musicians at around 8.15pm.

There will also be choirs and solo artists plus stalls and refreshments. Tickets cost £5 from the hospice shops or on the gate and visitors can picnic in the grounds and come and go throughout the day.
