TENNIS enthusiasts from Lydney's White-cross School recently saw the Great Britain v South Africa tie in this year's Davis Cup competition.

Whitecross was one of four schools in the west to win free tickets for the match, held at the National Indoor Arena.

The good fortune follows a successful season for tennis playing Whitecross students who entered tournaments hosted by Ribston High School, Gloucester, during the summer months.

Sarah Smith, Emma Webb, Ben Rudd and Tom Rudd all played well with Sarah and Tom making it through to the semi-finals.

Tennis development has been high on the agenda this year, with Whitecross, the Lawn Tennis Association, Lydney Tennis Club and the district council combining to improve the standard of tennis and encourage pupils in the game.

County matches were set and Whitecross also entered students into the Gloucestershire Schools championships.

The Year 11 pupils have drawn inspiration from the high standards at Davis Cup level. Mrs Jackie Longton of the sports department said: "We had a fabulous day out and saw Tim Henman and Greg Rudeski play their matches. It was a great atmosphere and we were even treated to a spot of singing by Cliff Richard who was watching, along with Elaine Page. The tennis was impressive and we were all glad to see the British win."
