THIS driver had a lucky escape when their red Volkswagen beetle car went up in flames at the top of Highfield Road in Lydney this morning.

Thankfully the driver was able to get out before fire engulfed the engine, with the fierce blaze shattering the windscreen.

Police temporarily closed the road to traffic heading in the Gloucester direction while the incident was dealt with around 11am.

The front of the car, which was abandoned next to a bus stop, was completely gutted by the blaze.
