A MAN had a lucky escape when a car crashed down steps into the River Wye.

There were dramatic scenes at the old town steps in Monmouth shortly before 1am on Saturday when emergency services arrived at the scene to find the vehicle upside down in the water.

The site next to Monmouth Rowing Club has received complaints of ‘boy racers’ executing hand brake turns beside the river in the middle of the night in the past.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “We received reports of a silver Volkswagon Polo in the River Wye close to Old Dixton Road at around 0.50am on Saturday, March 31.

“A man was inside the car when it entered the river but he was able to escape and the car was recovered shortly after.”

She said it was not known whether there were any injuries during the incident.
