ANTHONY Reeve, in his recent letter to the Review, states that the EU is being propped up by British money when, in fact, no money from the UK was used in the the bailouts of failing European economies.
It is a fact that the European economy is driven by the might of Germany whose gross national product dwarfs our own.
I know that Mr Reeve will be uncomfortable with this but our so called Commonwealth does not exist any longer and, if it did, why should they trade with us, when they can continue trading with the biggest market on Earth in the EU?
Perhaps Mr. Reeve would like us to send a gunboat and sort out these pesky foreigners, like we did in the good old days.
It is obvious that there are those in the Conservative party who take Mr Reeve’s view that we should leave the EU, no matter what, for the sake of political dogma.
These people have never wanted EU membership for the UK and see the referendum as their opportunity to get us out, regardless of the damage they could inflict on the country and their own party.
They believe that the UK can survive on its own, outside the EU because they have the arrogance to think that they will be the ruling party after leaving and the country will be run by them.
However, there is another scenario.
If these people have their way and the electorate vote to leave the EU, it could create an even greater rift in the Tory party.
The resignation of the Prime Minister could follow, leading to a General Election. The unthinkable could then become a reality, ie: Jeremy Corbyn could defeat a divided Tory Party and become our first Marxist Prime Minister.
What a disaster that would be, Britain could perish in isolation from the rest of Europe.
We would be back to a massive programme of nationalisation, investors leaving the country in their droves, a bankrupt treasury, union dominance and everything else that a socialist government brings.
Of course, I realise that this could be called the product of a fertile imagination but it’s as plausible as Mr Reeve’s letter.
Be careful what you wish for.
