SOCIAL networking site, Facebook, is to be temporarily banned at the Royal Forest of Dean College in a move that's provoked a storm of protest from students.
The ban, which will block access to Facebook throughout the college network, came into force on Monday and will end tomorrow (October 22).
Students have angrily protested about the ban, claiming it is unfair and Facebook should be allowed during free time.
A meeting to discuss a permanent ban is set to go ahead before the end of the month between student representatives and the college's principal, Janek Patel.
In a statement sent out to all student's, Mr Patel said: "There is a growing concern about the use of Facebook in both work and educational establishments. The reasons for these concerns are harassment, bullying, photo images and discrimination. I am sure you are all aware of some of the very distressing occurrences that have recently arisen from social networking sites. As a college, we have a duty of care to all our staff and learners and need to devise policies and procedures with the involvement of learners, staff and managers to ensure we meet legal requirements for a safe college to learn and work in."
A spokesman for the college, said problems had arisen with some students using Facebook at computer work stations and blocking access to other students trying to work.
"The work stations are here for students to do their work, they're here to learn, not to deal with their social life."
However, it was confirmed that student opinions are "actively being sought" and a decision on a permanent ban won't be made until after proper discussion.
