TOM Atkinson is correct when he says that facts and sources are important when debating the EU referendum (Review, April 22).
That is why voters should believe what the US President said on the issue because he was stating a fact and his sources are impeccable.
However, the same cannot be said of the Brexit campaigners who seem to be basing their strategy on hope and nationalistic fervour.
They tell us not to take any notice of the US President, the Governor of the Bank of England, or the head of the IMF as these experts know nothing.
Instead they are asking us all to hold hands and jump off the cliff together and, if in doubt, a bit of mindless Union Jack waving will see us through.
Mr Akinson quoted the Daily Express (a rabid Brexit supporter) and a 40-year-old quote from Harold Wilson to make his point.
He asks us to base our voting decision on two questions: “do you want to be a servant of Brussels?” and “do you want to be able to vote out your lawmakers and tax takers?”
These are loaded questions because, firstly, who is going to vote yes, to being a “servant” and, secondly, when it comes to voting out tax takers and lawmakers, I cannot even do that in our own political system which can be just as undemocratic as the EU.
For instance, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were waged against the will of the British people at great human and financial cost.
So if Brexit want to hand out lessons in democracy, they could start with our own government.
I have two alternative questions for voters in the referendum: “do you want the strength of a family of trading nations?” or “do you want to cause financial mayhem and more unemployment?”
